Abstract:
This study explores the concept of media architecture as knowledge media, serving as a bridge between the physical and the digital realms through the integration of the four dimensions of 4E Cognition (embodied, embedded, enacted, extended). A qualitative analysis of 22 empirical studies from the Media Architecture Biennale (MAB), published between 2012 and 2023, maps the presence and interrelations of the 4E dimensions within these environments. The methodology combines thematic content analysis with network visualization, revealing a predominance of the informational and performative dimensions. It also confirms amplification as the predominant effect in media architecture, enhancing experiences and interactions. However, the embodied dimension exhibits low centrality, highlighting the need for greater attention to corporeality in architectural experience. The article proposes that balancing the 4E dimensions should guide both research and design practices to ensure that media architecture functions effectively as knowledge media. Adopting multimethod protocols and developing projects that foster sensory engagement, and interdisciplinary integration is recommended to expand the cognitive and social impact of these environments. This research contributes to the field by indicating pathways toward richer and more effective cognitive experiences in media architecture.
